How To Be Free From Lust – A Biblical Guide
Praise the Lord Everyone!
In this blog, we will explore how to break free from lust. Many people struggle with impure thoughts and sinful desires, often asking, “How can I get rid of lust?” If this question resonates with you, keep reading. I believe that God will purify you and make you holy.
As it is written:
“The one who calls you is holy, so you also become holy.”
Let’s dive deeper into understanding lust, its origin, and the steps to overcoming it.
What Does the Bible Say About Lust?
Romans 6:11-14 (NIV)
[11] In the same way, count yourselves dead to sin but alive to God in Christ Jesus.
[12] Therefore do not let sin reign in your mortal body so that you obey its evil desires.
[13] Do not offer any part of yourself to sin as an instrument of wickedness, but rather offer yourselves to God as those who have been brought from death to life; and offer every part of yourself to him as an instrument of righteousness.
[14] For sin shall no longer be your master because you are not under the law, but under grace.
Understanding This Verse
The Bible clearly tells us to consider ourselves dead to sin but alive in Christ. When a person is dead, they cannot see, hear, or speak. Likewise, we must be spiritually dead to sin—turning away from anything that fuels lustful desires.
Where Does Lust Come From?
Matthew 6:22-23 (NIV)
[22] “The eye is the lamp of the body. If your eyes are healthy, your whole body will be full of light.
[23] But if your eyes are unhealthy, your whole body will be full of darkness. If then the light within you is darkness, how great is that darkness!”
Sources of Lust
Lust often begins with what we allow into our minds. Here are common triggers:
- Watching inappropriate videos, movies, or images.
- Listening to ungodly music or conversations.
- Engaging in impure speech and thoughts.
To overcome lust, we must guard our eyes, ears, and mouth.
What Is Lust?
Lust is not just an action but an imagination, a thought, and a feeling.
For example:
- If you watch an inappropriate video, the image lingers in your mind.
- Over time, thoughts build up, leading to sinful actions.
This is why Jesus warned us to protect our hearts and minds from sin.
My Testimony: How I Overcame Lust
I was once trapped in lust. I watched sinful content and struggled with impure thoughts. One day, I asked a pastor, “How can I be free?” He told me:
- Stop watching, stop listening, stop speaking impure things.
- Immerse yourself in God’s Word.
At first, even after quitting sinful habits, I still struggled. I had lustful dreams and intrusive thoughts. When I asked for help again, my pastor explained:
- Renewing your mind is the next step.
- The Bible says, “I will wash your mind with pure water.”
- God replaces our stone heart with a heart of flesh.
How to Be Free from Lust
Step 1: Guard Your Eyes, Ears, and Mouth
- Eyes: Stop watching inappropriate content.
- Ears: Stop listening to ungodly music and conversations.
- Mouth: Stop speaking impure words.
Step 2: Replace Sinful Habits with Holy Ones
- Instead of watching bad content, watch sermons and Bible teachings.
- Instead of listening to ungodly music, listen to worship songs.
- Instead of speaking impure words, speak God’s Word daily.
Step 3: Renew Your Mind Through Scripture
- Meditate on the Bible for at least 2 hours daily.
- Read and confess verses like:
- “My body is the temple of the Holy Spirit.”
- “I am called to be pure.”
- “I am dead to sin and alive in Christ.”
